Grilled cheese sandwiches are an American favorite.
You can find them on the menu of quite a few restaurants.
Our grand kids love them and request them almost every time they visit.
They’re quick and easy to make. If you have a griddle, you can make them in mass quantities for kids, teenagers and adults alike.
Our grands prefer the standard cheddar cheese on wheat bread.
But NY and I thought we’d take it to a new level with a delicious grilled havarti cheese and fig sandwich on sourdough bread.
Wow!
A wee bit gooey, but finger lickin’ delicious!
Ingredients:
- Harvarti cheese, sliced thin for layering
- Fig spread or jam (we use Bonne Maman)
- Sourdough bread
- Butter (we use KerryGold Pure Irish Butter from grass-fed cows)
Directions:
- Slice enough havarti cheese for however many sandwiches you’re making. Divide the cheese slices into the number of sandwiches you’re making. Don’t skimp on the cheese but don’t go overboard either. It is after all a grilled cheese sandwich. *wink*
- Heat griddle or cast iron skillet. We use an electric griddle for crowds of three or more. (Especially teenage boys. Ha!) For just the two of us, we use a large cast iron skillet.
- Put your sourdough bread into matching sandwich pairs. Slather butter on the outside side of the each bread slice. Place one side of each sandwich pair butter side down onto/into your hot griddle/skillet.
- Layer the havarti cheese on each slice of bread on/in the griddle/skillet.
- Slather fig spread/jam on the non-buttered remaining bread slices.
- Place fig side down on the cheese side of the bread that is grilling.
- Cook approximately 4 minutes or until lightly browned. Carefully turn the sandwiches over and cook on the other side again for approximately 4 minutes. Watch carefully as to not burn.
- Remove each sandwich from griddle/skillet, slice in half and serve.
Enjoy!
