The wheels on the
school bus go round and round! Yup! It’s back to school … whether we’re ready or not. That means it’s also time for packing lunches and backpacks. And sending the kid’s off to smarten their smarts, make new friends, and get exercise on the playground. We want our grandkids to get the most out of everyday so we pack them the best lunches with ingredients they love. Here are our top 5 tips for a healthy lunchbox!
I think most kid’s look forward to lunchtime. I know our granddaughter does. Sometime’s I think it’s her favorite time of day. But young kids, if given the opportunity, can easily choose unhealthy options. That’s why we like to pack lunches at home. Lunches filled with healthy organic food that we know is good for their bodies and brains too!
Today we chose Annie’s Homegrown Certified Organic Grass-Fed Shells & White Cheddarfor this lunch box. Our grandkid’s love it. But most importantly there are 10 grams of protein in each serving. That will get them through to dinnertime.
The best veggies for your kid’s lunch are the veggie’s they like to eat. We chose to add peas to the mac & cheese. Broccoli would have worked for our grandkids, too. But a side of baby carrot sticks, zucchini slices, or even cucumbers would work well also.
Our kid’s grew up eating fresh fruit in their lunches. If nothing else, I always had/have fruit in the house. Said kids are all grown up and they still eat fresh fruit daily. And the grandkids do likewise. We mixed some fresh blueberries in with the grands favorite Cocoa Bunnies.
I’m a firm believer in fiber in our diets. We do love whole wheat or multi-grain bread. But there are other options besides sandwiches. Our grandkid’s love Annie’s Certified Organic Chewy Chocolate Chip Granola Bars. Or, how about a handful of Annie’s Certified Organic Cheddar Bunnies with dried cranberries? I’m here to tell you kid’s love them. Oh! And so does our 35-year old son!
We like adding a small bottle of water to the grand’s lunch, although they like also like apple or pineapple juice. Have you ever heard the saying: Saw it… liked it … told Grandma … got it!? Yeah, so guess what the grands usually get in their lunch?
A Special Treat
We include a healthy sweet that will make them smile, with a sweet love note sometimes that will encourage them. Or both! In today’s lunch we added both. The sweet treat is a handful or so of Annie’s Homegrown Certified Organic Cocoa Bunnies. They’re a crunchy, chocolatey snack the kids love. And, as you can see, they like it for breakfast sometimes, too! *wink
Okay, I know this is an extra tip, but it’s the most important of all: Let the kiddos help choose what goes in their lunch. If they’re old enough, they can even pack it themselves. If there’s a possibility that they may not choose healthy options, give them choices. Healthy choices. But let them pick.
There you have it. Our very best lunchbox tips. The grands are happy with a lunch they like and we’re happy knowing we’re giving them healthy organic foods.
