Landscapes in many areas of Southern California are still recovering from a prolonged drought. The lack of rain and watering restrictions contributed to the demise of our front lawn. So we decided to add color with evergreens and flowers instead of replanting sections of the lawn area. It’s actually coming together quite nicely and we’re enjoying the transition process. This week we repurposed our front garden birdbath. Because the front birdbath is the least used of the 3 we have, we decided to switch it up into a DIY birdbath flower garden.
The added colorful plants are making a world of difference. We’re loving the variety of Monrovia plants to choose from at our local Lowe’s. We’ve found Monrovia plants grow well and last longer in our Southern California weather. Monrovia provides a colorful palette of plant selections, including succulents, evergreens, and flowers. Monrovia had exactly what we were looking for!
Switching out our birdbath to flowers was easy peasy. We had everything we needed except for the plants. At first, we thought about making it into a succulent garden. We also wanted to brighten up the front yard. So we went with brightly colored flowers.
Supplies:
- Old distressed birdbath (or new!)
- Hand trowel
- Potting soil
- Plants of choice
Directions:
- Clean the birdbath of debris
- Add potting soil to the birdbath.
- Arrange flowers and plants as desired.
- Add water and enjoy!
We’re loving the flowers against the weatherworn birdbath. And we don’t think the birds will mind one bit there’s one less birdbath in the yard. We’re also delighted that the hummingbirds and bees are also loving the new addition to their realm.

Our local arts and crafts store is now selling new birdbaths that are already distressed. Also, if you want one that is distressed, check your local home improvement store, they keep them outside and the weather makes them look a lot older than they actually are.

What a cute way to upcycle a bird bath. I have an old one that I could use for this.

We don’t have a birdbath in our yard, but if I did, I would love to decorate it up like this. It looks so pretty, and I could just put another birdbath in the yard for the birds to use!
