We recently partnered with Knott’s Berry Farm to experience the awesome Ghost Town Alive! Ghost Town Alive! is an interactive experience where visitors become citizens of Calico Ghost Town and join the townspeople in the Founder’s Day celebration. There’s a whole lot of action going down in Calico. We’re sharing our tips for making the most of Knott’s Berry Farm Ghost Town Alive!.
We spent an entire day at Knott’s with our two youngest grandkids. And we are here to tell you … Ghost Town Alive! is awesome. We knew Cody and Kennedy would enjoy it, but we were surprised that they were totally involved for over six hours. Yes, six hours! It was a complete wild, wild west adventure for them. We’re already planning another visit to Ghost Town Alive! again soon.
Interact! Get in on the fun!
Dressing up western isn’t necessary, but it sure adds to the fun. If you have cowboy/western style hats and bandanas, wear them. It’s all in the spirit of FUN in the Wild West. If you don’t have any western gear, stop by the General Store in Calico and they’ll fix you up.
The General Store will have all you need right down to good old fashioned candy for munching on throughout the day. We bought candy, hats, bandanas and … toy guns to fit the part.
Be sure to stop by the Barber Shop to get your complimentary old west mustache. There are several styles to choose from. You can also get it refreshed during your stay in Calico.
Percy, the barber, might even have you deliver a package to the Pony Express Outpost! I wonder if Percy knew Kennedy had a hankering for outlawing when he handed her that package!
Join Calico!
Stop by the Court House and become an official citizen of Calico Ghost Town. then walk around the corner to The Pony Express Outpost. Before you know it you’ll be delivering packages and letters to many of the townsfolk. You’ll become fast friends with your fellow citizens right quick. And that my friends is a whole lot of fun!
The town of Calico has it’s very own newspaper that’s published several times a day. The Calico Gazette‘s editor was quick to see that Kennedy was an excellent eavesdropper reporter, and could bring him up-to-the-minute news in Calico. She earned her very own Press Pass and was quoted in the afternoon edition of the Gazette. She was more than a little thrilled!
Check out the Calico Dress Shop. You can design your own dress! Not only is it fun but it’s educational.
The kids are sure to get a kick out of The Old School House and the school teacher will be oh so delighted to have new students.
Visit the Blacksmith and give the dinner triangle a ring. How many times have you dreamed of doing that at home?
Pan for Gold. David and I remember panning for gold as kids! Cody and Kennedy were more than a little surprised that Knott’s was around back then. Ha!
You won’t want to miss checking in on the Ghost Town Jail and Sad Eye Joe. But mind your manners and don’t talk back to the sheriff. You just might find yourself behind bars! Cody and Kennedy were caught off guard that Sad Eye Joe knew their names, that they were siblings, and were at Knott’s with their grandparents. Little did they know that Grandpa was feeding the guy in the jail office those little tidbits for Joe. Ha!!
Enjoy the BBQ:
While there is a plethora of food and several restaurant to choose from at Knott’s Berry Farm, right smack in the middle of Ghost Town is the Fireman’s BBQ. Cody enjoyed the biggest turkey leg we may have ever seen, along with the barbecued rib dinner. Growing teenage boy! David and I eat a whole food, plant based diet (vegan), so we enjoyed the roasted corn on the cob, coleslaw and baked potatoes. We discovered most Knott’s Berry Farm restaurants have vegan or vegetarian options. They’re not necessarily listed on the menu, so ask and you may be pleasantly surprised. But, can I just say how incredibly delicious the roasted corn on the cob is?!

Enjoy the Entertainment!
Take a break from the heat and have a snack and/or drink in the Calico Saloon. We had an ice cold Sarsaparilla. It was so good! Just like root beer! The entertainment in the newly remodeled saloon is upbeat, loud and quite fun. Belly on up to the bar and enjoy yourself! Check the daily schedule for show times. There are usually 5 shows daily.
The Wild West Stunt Show: Frontier Feats of Wonder is at the Wagon Camp Theater. Again, check the daily schedule for show times. There are usually 3 show daily.
Snoopy’s Magnificent Magical Revue is a delightful magic show starring Snoopy and the whole gang. The amazing magic of Magician Greg Wilson will have you wondering if what you saw really is what happened! The lavish musical numbers are pure family friendly entertainment! Check the daily schedule for show times in the Charles M. Schulz Theatre. June 10 – August 20, 2017. Dark on Wednesdays.

Dance at the Hoedown!
At 5:30pm each day the whole town gets together for a good old fashioned, knee-slapping hoedown. Meet up with everyone at Calico Park and be ready to dance to the beat. Or should we say fiddles, and have a rip-roaring good time.
So … what do you think? Are you ready to step back in time? Maybe we’ll see you there!
David says: The kids enjoyed the blast from the past. And had modern day theme rides to enjoy also.
Cathi says: Ghost Town Alive! is a jolly good time for all ages. I can even put into words how much fun the grandkids had. And the BBQ… it is SO good!
Cody says: I loved how all the people always stayed in character and were so funny while doing it!
Kennedy says: I loved being a reporter for the Calico Gazette and getting my name in the Gazette too!
