Micheal Heizer has been a part of our home for over twenty years.
There are three pieces of his art gracing our walls. They’re large, bold and colorful.
We recently learned about Michael Heizer’s newest project which is called Levitated Mass. Levitated Mass is designed around a 340 ton boulder (aka mass) that measures approximately 21.5 by 21.5 feet. The boulder will rest on a 456-foot long slot that is carved into the earth. As museum patrons descend through the monumental slot, the boulder will appear to rise. Thus … Levitated Mass. Heizer originally conceived Levitated Mass in 1968 but only recently discovered the perfect boulder.
The boulder is making it’s slow, eleven day, one hundred and six mile journey to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. And it’s shrink wrapped in white plastic. The transporter that’s moving the boulder is roughly 260 feet long and 32 feet wide. It. Is. Huge. The transporter is traveling about 5 to 8 mph through four counties via side streets, cloaked in the darkness of night. During the day the boulder will be parked at various locations where spectators (and Heizer fans) can view it.
Being the Heizer fans that we are … as soon as we learned about the journey of the Levitated Mass … we knew we wanted to see history in the making. And we wanted our grandchildren to see it too. What I won’t say is that our eleven year old grandson was more excited about being interviewed by Toni Guinyard of NBC 4 LA News and camera man Mike. But …

Hey I saw Cathi, NY, and the Grands! Love the video and so interesting to hear more about this. I caught bits and pieces about it on the national news, but had no idea what it was really about. Adore the photo of the kids with the news crew!
