I remember a day long ago when I had been teaching a sewing class. With my sewing bag loaded with supplies, I stopped by my friend Mary’s house and picked up my kids. She had been tending them while I was teaching class. Her daughter Katie came home with us for a play date. When we arrived home, the kids jumped out of the van and ran off to play. When I went to the backseat to get my sewing bag I found a big pile of golden brown hair on the floor. It was the exact color of my daughter Britt’s hair. But it was also the exact color of her friend Katie’s hair. Panic set in as I tried to figure out exactly what had happened.
Turns out my son Brian found my sewing scissors in my bag. He decided to give BOTH Britt and Katie haircuts! I think as parents we’ve all experienced the random haircut. Britt had even cut her own hair a few years before. But MY child cutting a friend’s child’s hair? Total mortification!
For that reason (and many more), I adore the new book by Britt Menzies. Britt is the author of the StinkyKids series. Most recently, StinkyKids and the Runaway Scissors.
The StinkyKids came about when Britt Menzies daughter, Emma, asked her to draw a picture of her as a ballerina. That one picture of Emma eventually led to nine more StikyKids and three books.
StinkyKids and the Runaway Scissors is an adorable story about The StinkyKids, bubble gum, StinkyKid Britt’s red hair and, you guessed it … a pair of scissors.
The story begins with Britt arriving at her friend Julie’s house for a playdate. Her friends had already decided to play ‘haircut shop’ when Britt blew a big bubble with her bubble gum and Max popped it. That’s when Britt confesses that she had gum stuck in her hair.
The dilemma of gum stuck in Britt’s hair is where the story takes off. All the kids have their own ideas of how to remove the gum, from peanut butter to ice cubes. And ultimately … with scissors!
I’m not going to give the story away but, I think all parents can learn a lesson from Britt’s mother. There’s also a good lesson for children and how they should trust the grown ups in their life. Brilliant story! Adorable illustrations!
StinkyKids and the Runaway Scissors is the third book in the StinkyKids series written by Britt Menzies and illustrated by Greg Hardin and John Trent. Not only is StinkyKids and the Runaway Scissors an asset to any child’s library, it also has Teaching tools at the end of the story which includes ‘Using This Story as a Teaching Tool’, Suggestions to Further Engage Children’, and Takeaway Messages’.
The StinkyKids website is brimming with adorable book, dolls, toys and even a few StinkyKid snacks! You can stay up to date with they StinkyKids on Facebook and Twitter too. StinkyKids and the Runaway Scissors is also available on Amazon.
