American Girl dolls have been part of our family for almost thirty years. Our daughter Britt woke up Christmas morning 1987 and welcomed Samantha Parkington into our family. Since then, our American Girl family expanded with the addition of Bitty Baby and Kit Kittridge. Now we open our hearts to the newest American Girl Maryellen Larkin!
The year is 1954, Maryellen is almost ten years old and is about to enter the fourth grade. Our grand-daughter, Kennedy, is also nearly ten years old and just started the fourth grade. Kennedy is thrilled she and Maryellen have so much in common. But unlike Kennedy, Maryellen has three sisters and two little brothers. Kennedy is the only girl with two older brothers. Needless to say, she’s very happy to have a new sister in Maryellen.
Maryellen is from the era of side swept bangs and ponytails that ‘sway with a wiggle, with a wiggle when she walks.’ Her thick long light red hair is pulled up into a ponytail tied with a big bow. Maryellen likes to wear birthday party dresses with white gloves, baby doll pajamas, and monogrammed sweaters. She’s dreaming of a new dress for the first day of fourth grade. And wait until you find what her mom surprises her with.
One of the many special things about Maryellen is her imagination. She loves to act out the adventures of her favorite television characters. It doesn’t matter if she’s alone, with her dog Scooter, or playing with Davy, the boy next door, Maryellen’s imagination has her saving the day in one adventure after another.
American Girl dolls have been bringing happiness to children (young and old) since 1986. They are well made, high quality dolls that are meant to be played with. They’re not meant to sit on a shelf and watch the world go by.
Maryellen is part of the ‘Beforever‘ line of historical dolls, books, and accessories that helps to connect girls with inspiring characters and timeless stories from America’s past. It’s a fun way to learn and experience history!
Kennedy doesn’t have any sisters. And her brothers aren’t overly crazy about letting her brush and style their hair! But Maryellen is game for anything (short of a haircut!) that Kennedy wants to do to her hair. Up, down, pony tail or pig tails, Maryellen is definitely Kennedy’s new BFF!
I see a lot of love and adventures in the future for these two little girls. I’m truly excited about it. With all the electronic devices these days, I think children may not be using their imaginations enough. American Girl brings that opportunity back with Maryellen and the ‘Beforever‘ collection.
And I have to admit … I’m a bit over the moon about Kennedy learning about my era. Because, like Maryellen, I too am a product of the ‘Nifty Fifties!’
American Girl sent us ‘Maryellen Larkin’ to facilitate our review. They are also providing the winner of the giveaway with a ‘Maryellen Larkin’ doll. All thoughts, opinions and memories are our own. Oh! And so is adorable Kennedy!! She’s our one and only grand daughter!
