In the summer we host backyard parties, holiday barbecues and find oh so many reasons to enjoy being outside. Especially in the evening when it cools down from the heat of the day. We love adding a candle lit ambiance to our backyard and patio with hanging mason jar candle lights. They add light to the yard is a subtle way and if you’re lucky… you’ll also get a prism or two sparkling about in the trees.
Hanging mason jar candle lights are easy peasy to make. Fact is you can have a dozen hanging amongst your trees in an hour or so.
Supplies: (affiliate links)
- Mason jars – I use wide mouth quart jars
- Heavy gauge wire – I used black 16.5 gauge rebar tie however it’s a matter of preference.
- Needle nosed pliers
- Wire cutters – Only if your needle nose pliers don’t have built-in cutters.
- Floating candles – These are my favorite
That’s it! You might already have all those supplies on hand.
Directions:
- Cut a piece of wire about 15 inches long. That’s long enough to go around a wide mouth mason jar just below the threads. This is your base wire.
- Cut another piece of wire about 21 inches long. This will be the hanger/handle wire. Loop each end of the hanger/handle wire. If your able to twist the end around the wire, go for it. It’s too difficult for me so I choose to twist it after it’s mounted on the base wire.
- Carefully twist the base wire tight. Push the twist downward. It’s sharp!
- Twist the loop ends. they don’t have to be tight, just secure.
- Pour water in the jars to float the candles. I like the water at the 1 cup line.
- Place a floating candle in each jar.
- Leave as is or embellish with flowers, jute or ribbon. Make sure the embellishments will not be in line of the flame.
- Hang your jars in trees, on your patio or use as table and walkway decorations.
Enjoy!
