As summertime gets into full swing, American flags and patriotic decorations are popping up everywhere. I love wreaths! Our patriotic door wreaths are my favorite! Today we want to share how to make these festive red, white, and blue wreath with our patriotic wreath tutorial.
The wreaths are simple to make. Depending on the fabric you choose, the wreaths can be for any occasion. I chose three different fabrics. But one or two or more will work just as well.
Supplies:
- 14 inch straw wreath
- 1 and 1/4 yards of fabric, 44 inches wide
- 3 yards satin ribbon
- Scalloped fabric shears
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Phillips head screwdriver
Cut the fabric into 4 inch squares.
Put a large drop of hot glue on the top center of the straw wreath.
Wrap a square of fabric around the screwdriver (right side of fabric up) and poke the fabric covered screwdriver into the hot glue drop and into the wreath about 1/2 an inch.
I flattened out the fabric with my finger or the handle of the screwdriver before the glue sets so it looks a bit like a flower. I used my navy squares first and spaced each one about two inches apart. Then in between each navy square I glues a striped square and a flag square.
I repeated the process along the outside edge of the wreaths.
And repeated the process one last time along the inside edge of the wreaths.
To hang the wreaths, I cut a 1 inch wide piece of navy blue ribbon 3 yards long (for each wreath). After wrapping it around the wreaths I carefully tied a knot 6-8 inches from the wreath.
I simply run the ribbon over the top of the door and use a push pin to anchor it to the inside of the door.We hang all our door wreaths this way! We like the look of the ribbon hanging down inside the door. We’d love to see photos of your front doors!

I love your red doors!! My outside door is a condo door and we can’t put anything on it! But I love wreaths, just have to hang them indoors. This is great, I want to remember this for next year. I like the little secret tricks you let us know how to make this. I’m a crafter and sewer from way back, and I’ve never seen a nicer patriotic wreath! You did a great job with the tutorial and photos, too.
Cathi Crismon says
Oh Rosie! You are a sweetheart. Thank you so much. I’m a bit partial to those red doors too. They were a dream of mine for many many years.

I love this project. Simple and easy to do. I like the idea of using a screwdriver for the hot glue. That tip will surely save my finger tips.

This is a fantastic idea! For so many of my friends, wreaths only go as far as the holiday season but there are so many ways to get creative with color schemes and themes. Would love to make this for Memorial Day.
