We watch very little television at our house but we love to have a good movie night on occasion. Especially when we’re sitting down with our grand kids and a bowl of, as our granddaughter calls it, “Grandma’s Magic Popcorn.” But unless I’ve actually viewed the film (even those rated for children), I’m always a bit anxious there might be something I deem unacceptable for kids. That’s why we’re more than happy to partner with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Blue Sky Studios for the celebration of Ice Age: Collision Course being released on Blu-Ray. I have nothing to worry about with the Ice Age film franchise because I know it’s going to be good clean fun, and we’re going to laugh and have a fabulous movie night. The whole Ice Age gang is back for the fifth installment of their story, along with a whole bunch of free-spirited newbies. And remember Buck, the Australian weasel from downunder in the land of dinosaurs? He’s back too, and he’s here to save the day planet from a rogue asteroid.
But let’s start at the beginning …
Ice Age: Collision Course is a continuation of the saga of its predecessors. With this latest chapter the mischievous Scrat is about to send the solar system into a tailspin. And that notorious acorn of his is about to knock an asteroid on a collision course with earth.
Ice Age: Collision Course is fun, educational, and down right hysterical. We’ve watched it several times recently and every time we watch it we notice something we didn’t see before. The old gang is true-to-form with their antics. And when you really get down to it, their loyalty for each other. And the new characters! I’m here to tell you, they bring a whole new psychedelic color to the film.
We were invited by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Blue Sky Studios to spend the day at the Discovery Cube OC, with opportunities to see a bit of the behind-the-scenes making of Ice Age: Collision Course. This included incredible interviews with co-director, Galen Chan, and animator/head of story, Jony Chandra. They both flew in from New York just to spend time with us and a room full of other excited media representatives.
Galen Chan gave us some background on how the idea for Ice Age: Collision Course came about. No spoiler alerts here, but if you watch the official trailer in this post, you’ll see how this film ties in with the very first Ice Age film. It’s awesome and full of Ooos! and Ahhhs! One of the things the writers and animators wanted was for the film to have a celestial feel, so they tied it all in with a pink and purple theme.
Jony Chandra is amazing. He can draw like nobody’s business. Not only were we, David and I, impressed with his quick hand and artistic ability, but our grand kids were too! He drew characters from the Ice Age films and it was all projected on the big screen. It was so cool to watch the drawing come to life right before our eyes.
Dr. Abby Kavner is a professor at UCLA’s Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences. And Dr. Kavner LOVES her work. She’s excited about her area of study and loves sharing what she knows. That’s her silhouette up there (lower left corner) with Buck and the meteorite. Her excitement is contagious. And it wasn’t long before everyone in the room was wanting to learn from her expertise and get a close-up look at her rock collection. Now her rock collection is nothing short of incredible. See that little rock that 10-year old Kennedy is holding? That little rock is no ordinary rock. It’s a four and a half billion year old meteorite. Yup! Four and a half BILLION years old. How about that?
Which brings me to a basic fact. Did you know that a meteorite is a piece of a fallen asteroid? It’s true! Kennedy’s Dr. Kavner’s meteorite is just a small piece of a huge asteroid. Just like the one that’s on a collision course with earth in the newest Ice Age film. I think you’ll enjoy Ice Age: Collision Course as much as we did.
