Even though I graduated from high school 38 years ago … (Wow! I wasn’t expecting that number!) … I remember it as if it were yesterday. Not because I received a new car for a graduation gift. I didn’t. And not because I graduated with Kevin Costner. I did. I remember my graduation because it’s one of the biggest milestones in my life. My best friend Diane and I walked into kindergarten together and we walked out of our high school graduation together. While I don’t remember tossing my hat in the air, like my children did, I do remember beach balls being tossed about by my graduation class. I was excited about the pomp and circumstance. But most of all I was excited about leaving high school behind.

Interestingly enough, as much as I wanted to begin my new independent adult life (at age 17!), I vividly remember the moment my diploma was handed to me. Suddenly, right there on the platform, in front of my peers, family and the whole world (so it seemed), I realized I didn’t know what I was going to do the next day, week or month. And I was scared. Sure, I knew I was going to spend a lot of summer days at the beach. But suddenly I was on my own without teachers or bells telling me where to be and what time to be there. I was scared … but it was fabulous!
Next month our oldest grandson will graduate from elementary school. We’re proud of what he has accomplished in the first six years of his education. He’s worked hard and excelled. I know he’ll be making the first of many graduation memories. And… before we know it he’ll be celebrating his high school graduation!
