The liquid amber tree in our front yard produces very interesting seed pods. We’ve been told by our grandchildren that these seed pods can leave quite an impression if stepped on … especially with bare feet! Usually before Christmastime all the seed pods are gone. But not so this year. There on the tree, amongst all the new evidence of spring, is one last ‘determined-not-to-fall’, dried up pod. It’s hanging on for dear life.

I’ve never heard this tree called a liquid amber tree. We have always called it a sweet gum tree… with sweet gum balls!! I do realize that the balls are the seed pods, but it’s just so much fun to mess with people by saying gum balls! And yes, they do hurt if you step on them with bare feet!
