One of the most expensive monthly bills we have is our electric bill. We have a fairly large home with and air conditioner/furnace for upstairs and another for downstairs. I’ve gotten in the habit of only running the downstairs heater when its cold outside and the upstairs air conditioner when necessary to save on the cost of energy.
We recently discovered our electric bill has a new feature that shows how many kilowatts we’re using each … day right down to the hour. It’s a great tool that can help us to make educated decisions about saving energy.
Another impressive tool is the Kill A Watt made by P3 International. Simply plug in appliances to the Kill A Watt and to assess how efficient they really are. The large LCD display counts consumption by the Killowatt-hour the same way our local utility company does. In the above photo we having our Nikon battery charger plugged into the Kill A Watt.
- The Kill A Watt is easy to use. Simply plug it into any outlet and plug whatever you want to test into the Kill A Watt.
- The Kill A Watt will tell you how much electricity the tested device (appliance, hair dryer, iron) is consuming.
- The Kill A Watt will help to identify what is costing too much to operate and which items may need to be replaced for energy efficiency. I learned that the steam iron I use to press clothes uses more electricity than I ever thought possible.
The Kill A Watt is inexpensive to buy and simple to use. More importantly, it can help to lessen your footprint on the environment.
