As a mother and a grandmother, I worry about our Nation’s security. The terrifying events of 9/11 had quite a bit to do with popping the secure little bubble I believed we all lived in. I do all the things I can to keep my family safe and prepared for anything the future might bring. I have food and emergency supplies stored and I keep 72 hour emergency back packs ready to grab if necessary. But I still worry even though I feel I’m physically prepared.
National Security Mom was the perfect book for me to read. It helped to alleviate many of my fears and gave me the confidence I need to get involved instead of sitting at home worrying.
Written by Gina M. Bennett, a Senior Counter Terrorism Analyst, who has authored some of the earliest warnings of today’s terrorism trends, she wrote the 1993 report that warned of the growing danger of Osama Bin Laden.
Gina, a mother of five, is as comfortable helping out at her local elementary school as she is briefing the President on terrorism trends, and she can be found doing both on the same day!
As a mother, she saw many comparisons between the covert intelligence approach to national security and the everyday lessons she was teaching her children.
She has written the book in three parts:Part One describes how the rules parents try to live by also apply to making our nation strong and secure.Part Two offers a discussion of how the lessons we teach our children are appropriate for our nation and imagines a day when our children are America’s leaders.Part Three takes some liberties with famous quotes about parenting to highlight the similarities between parenting and governing a nation. This section is meant to encourage parents, especially mothers who tend to be less inclined to engage in national security and foreign policy debates, to participate in important government decisions.
Each of the three parts are filled with chapters of humorous personal experiences and lessons learned. I know I can’t be in total control of keeping my family safe from everything in life. National Security Mom has however helped me become comfortable with what I can do and not worry about the rest.
