When our kids were young they went to summer camp for kids at our local zoo every summer. It wasn’t always easy getting them up and ready to make the 40 minute drive everyday, but it was always worth it. I truly believed our eldest son would choose a career in the animal field. That he would spend his days as a zookeeper tending to wild animals.
As our kids grew older their interests changed and they spent their summers at sports, Boy Scout, and church camps. Sometimes the camps were local day camps. Other times they flew to camps out of state. Wherever it was they attended they would come home with tons of new information, ideas and friends. We would sit for hours as they excitedly shared their experiences.
This summer a new generation of our family is attending summer camps. Our grandchildren! Our five year old granddaughter and eight year old grandson attended day camp at a local church. They participated in activities and games and met new friends.
Our eleven year old grandson went to a week long church camp with a youth group. And while he had a fabulous time learning, hanging with his friends 24/7 and taking photos of all the shenanigans, his mom said he came home with a little bit of an attitude. I suppose that comes with the territory of being away from house rules … and mom and dad. (And being eleven-teen!)

He’s also had an incredible opportunity to attend a one week day camp at a nearby state university. He had to work to earn this opportunity though. It involved an application, an essay on his part, in addition to recommendations from his teachers at school.

I honestly think he understood the honor of being chosen. It wasn’t all fun and games either. There were some classroom settings where he may have felt as if he was still in school!

But just look at this classroom!

We were told he has great potential to possibly be an engineer!
The many hands on experiences from this unique day camp may be just what our grandson needs for inspiration to continue his education into college and further! Thank goodness for summer camps, kids and grandkids! They make this time of year enjoyable and memorable!!
