A few years ago our oldest grandson and his friend were at our house after school. They were both very unhappy about an event … or more precisely, a non-event that took place at school that day. It seemed the 4th grade girls had watched the ever so embarrassing ‘puberty’ film. Not so for our grandson and his friend. These hilarious outspoken young ‘men’ were furious that they had to wait a whole year before it was their turn to join the elite pubescent crowd. They shared with us how they explained to their teacher that they should see the film NOW. Our grandson even told his teacher that he was in fact in puberty. She calmly told him he had a few years (… and giggling under her breath, I’m sure). Our grandson is confident and is counseled well by his parents.
I, on the other hand, didn’t receive any counsel from home. I think it was a 60’s thing, or perhaps it sneaked up on my mom as it did me. What I do remember was an uncomfortable and embarrassing chain of events. I never forgot it and was determined my children wouldn’t experience the same.
American Girl has my same determination. The Care & Keeping of You – The Body Book for Girls 2 can help guide young girls through those pubescent life changes. It’s also a perfect handbook for mothers who may be shy or uncomfortable discussing necessary but personal topics with their daughters.
The Care & Keeping of You – The Body Book for Girls 2 goes beyond book 1 by covering topics from hormones and pimples to body changes and the menstrual cycle.
The topics are written with colorful illustrations and are easy to understand. It’s a wonderful book for mothers and daughters to read together. A perfect opportunity for bonding, growing and learning.
It’s a book women of all ages can still take lessons from. After all, I’m the grandma and I still have days like this! I’m giving this delightful little book to my daughter-in-law today. While it will be several years before 7-year old Kennedy needs to learn the facts of life, I know she’ll enjoy learning and talking about the changes her body will make with her mother. The mother/daughter time they’ll share growing and learning together can last for generations.
While American Girl dolls and storybooks have been part of our life for over 25 years, I had no idea they published non-fiction books to help young girls with everyday experiences. I’m over the top impressed!
The Care & Keeping of You – The Body Book for Girls is available on the American Girl website and Amazon.
No compensation was received for this post. We are impressed with ‘American Girl’ and their efforts to make childhood a wonderful experience. We also received a complimentary copy of ‘The Care & Keeping of You – The Body Book for Girls 2’.
