I’ve been feeling a bit ‘old’ lately. I’ve been missing the energy I had when I was younger in my 20’s and 30’s. I’ve even considered that elusive energy level might be lost forever. I raised my children in the country where they ran amuck on 4 acres. We raised chickens, pigs, cows and every ‘wild’ critter that country kids bring home. I also had a vegetable garden. A big vegetable garden. Very big. Almost bigger than the plot of land lot that our current house sits upon.
(This photo is from the summer of 1981. Pole beans in the front with a huge strawberry patch in the back. Squash, peppers, okra and other delectable favorites are in between.)
(Here you can see the sweet corn and tomato plants.)
In this garden I grew all of the vegetables I liked to eat. And even some I had never heard of before. I planted, watered, harvested, canned and fed my family. It was fabulous! I worked hard and slept soundly at the end of the day. At the time of these photos my youngest son, Todd, was a newborn baby.
I had energy I tell you! Endless energy!
Fast forward thirty a few years and we live in a house with neighbors and a much smaller yard. We have lovely gardens with fruit trees, flowers, and plants. But it’s been more than ten years since I’ve grown vegetables. I’ve used the excuse that we simply don’t have the room to have a ‘proper’ vegetable garden. That’s about to change.
I realize that Urban Gardening for Dummies isn’t going to give NY and me the energy we had years ago, but it is going to guide us through gardening in the space we have available.
