I have an addiction. Yup. I’m addicted to genealogy indexing.
I love genealogy but unfortunately for my ancestors I’m not very good at it. I get so frustrated when I hit a block wall that I have to jump off the band wagon. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is currently “Indexing” the U.S. 1900 Census reports. The Church has an incredible computer program that makes the task a delight.
It is awesome to read the different names, locations and origins of people although at times the fancy handwriting from 1900 is impossible to read. One lesson I’ve learned among many is… if in one hundred years someone might be reading what we write, we need to write legibly. Today I recorded the information on a gentleman whose birthplace is listed as “At Sea”. I’m impressed with the duration of marriages in the 1800’s. I’ve done over 2000 names and have only come across 2 divorces. Good odds. There are 50 names per page and when my eyes are heavy and my mind is shutting down, I find myself saying, “Just one more page, just one more page…”
