I have always admired Kristi Yamaguchi. I loved watching her as she made music come to life on the ice while winning her Olympic gold medal. Now, twenty years later, she’s still an athlete but has added wife, mother, artist, philanthropist and author to her list of accomplishments. She is an inspiration to people worldwide, both on and off the ice.
Kristi recently released her second children’s book starring Poppy the Pig.
It’s a Big World, Little Pig is the story of Poppy the Pig, an ice skater, who has been invited to compete in the World Games in Paris, France. Poppy lives in New York City and is nervous about traveling so far away from home. Her family and friends encourage her to follow her dreams and to dream big. Her best friend even gives her a good luck charm.
Shortly after Poppy arrives in Paris she quickly starts making friends.
As soon as she arrives at the Word Games venue she meets a snowboarder from China named Li. They’re both just a wee bit lost so they work together to find the check-in booth.
Later that day Poppy lunches with skier Gianna from Italy. They discover they both love a lot of the same things, including classical music!
While getting ready for practice Poppy meets Kiyomi from Japan. The first thing Poppy notices is Kiyomi’s sparkly costume. When Kiyomi sees Poppy’s ruffles they both knew they loved pretty costumes!
When she meets Zoe, a speed skater from Australia, she realizes that Zoe is as nervous about competing as she had been about leaving New York. Poppy gives Zoe the same advice her grandparents had given her: “You go girl!” That helped Zoe to feel much better.
Illustrated by Tim Bowers, It’s a Big World, Little Pig! is delightful, enjoyable and most importantly teaches children (and adults) that regardless of our differences, everyone is the same at heart. We may all look different, come from different places and speak differently, but we all smile in the same language!
So, who will enjoy It’s a Big World, Little Pig!? From the above photo, I’d say just about everyone! It’s a Big World, Little Pig! is available for purchase online at Amazon.

They say we should write about what we know. I am betting this is a beautiful book all the more because it is the world that the writer knows personally so well. Thank you for sharing your review of it.

I think I had heard she wrote a book initially but I didn’t know about the second. I love the story and messages about celebrating differences, dreaming big, and pursuing those dreams : )
