Walgreens is our pharmacy of choice. It’s where we buy our prescription and over the counter medications. Recently Express Scripts (middleman company between pharmacies providing the health care service and employers and health plans who pay for the medications) cut ties with Walgreens which is the nation’s largest drugstore chain.
According to a Walgreens and Express Scripts December press release, more than a quarter of a million people, mostly U.S. military personnel and family members along with retirees and others in the Department of Defense, have signed petitions asking for access to Walgreens under the Tricare pharmacy program. The number of signatures is growing by 10,000 every week.
The press release shows that Walgreens (and Duane Reade pharmacies in the New York City area) would like to continue working with Express Scripts. They would like to continue serving the nearly 6 million Tricare beneficiaries who will now not have in-network insurance coverage for their prescriptions.
To ease the burden on customers, Walgreens is offering a special discount on their annual membership for it’s Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens.
A family membership is only $10 a year and covers everyone in the immediate family including dependents 22 years old and younger and pets. Pets!
Individuals can also join for $5 a year.

Walgreens has served America’s military families for over 100 years. “The last thing military personnel, families and retirees need is for their pharmacy benefits and choices to be disrupted by this issue,” said Kermit Crawford, Walgreens president of pharmacy, health and wellness solutions and services. “Walgreens proposals to protect Tricare members remain on the table. There is no reason the parties cannot act quickly – before the Dec. 31 deadline – to protect Tricare members from disruption, and Walgreens is prepared to do so.” The December 31 deadline has come and gone however the signatures on the petitions show that the involved beneficiaries are still hoping for the best.
