10 Things to do in May
April showers bring May flowers. That’s what I’ve been waiting for. Southern California had more rain than we’ve had in years so I’m hoping we’ll have a bounty of May flowers.
Today, May first, is May Day. I remember as a child celebrating May Day by secretly leaving flowers on the porches of neighbors. We’d pick the flowers from our garden, put them in a jar with water, and tie a bow around the jar. It was fun ringing the door bell and running. All these years later I’m still hoping the neighbors enjoyed the traditional blooming surprises.

Relish the Simple Pleasures
When life gets busy it’s easy to miss simple pleasures. The simple things in our everyday lives. They can be different for everyone. Here are a few of our favorite simple pleasures.
- Checking an item off a to-do list.
- Watching children giggle and play.
- Stepping on a crunchy leaf.
- Feeling a breeze on the face.
- Hitting several green lights while out running errands in the car.
- Reminiscing about old times with friends.
What are a few of your simple pleasures?

Celebrate Mom
May 14th is Mother’s Day. Give Mom a visit. If you don’t live nearby… be sure to give her a call. Motherhood can be the most rewarding and yet hardest thing in life. We moms make mistakes and learn as we go. We’re not perfect. But through it all we love our children. We would firmly stand between our children and danger regardless their age. We love our children!
And if for some reason your mother isn’t in your life, celebrate the mother figure who has always been there for you: your grandmother, auntie, your best friend’s mom. Or the mother who gave birth to your children. Mothers, and those who take their place, are special.

Read The Constitution of the United States of America
There’s a lot going on with politics in the country. It can only benefit us to know and understand what The Constitution of the United States of America says. Read it. Then read it again as a family.
I haven’t re-read the Constitution of the United States since our kids were in school. Don’t be me! Ummm… our youngest graduated high school in 2000.
Phone a friend you haven’t talked to in years
Friends are a big part of growing up. A big part of our adult life too. You probably have a few good friends who made a big impact on your life that you haven’t seen or talked to in years. Or how about an elderly neighbor that was always kind and watched out for you when you were a kid? Make a phone call and brighten someone’s day!

Hold hands
It’s simple and it feels good. Be it your spouse, child, mom, dad, or best friend. It’s good for the soul and good for your heart.

Bake Bread
I’ve always been a bread baker. In the 90s when I worked at an elementary school I would bake four loaves of bread every morning and sell them for $3.00 a loaf in the teacher’s lounge. That $12.00 a day actually came in handy!
A plethora of bread recipes can be found on Pinterest. I think baking bread has actually become the new “thing.” A year ago at the beginning of the pandemic flour and yeast were two hard to find items. That’s when I started honing my sourdough bread making skills. Oh. So. Delicious!

Give Yoga a Go
Yoga is good for the mind, body and soul. It can improve strength, balance and flexibility. And also help ease back and arthritis discomfort. But always always check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program. David and I have had several doctors in different fields of expertise recommend yoga. One of the best things about yoga is you need not leave home to do it. There are literally hundreds of yoga selections on Youtube and other sources.

Celebrate Meatless Monday
Everyday of the week is meatless Monday at our house because… I am vegan. While David occasionally enjoys a good cheat, we do have meatless meals three times a day everyday.
Eating meatless is good for you as well as the animal kingdom. Especially if your doctor has recommended you eat less meat. Need suggestions? Simply search Meatless Monday, Vegetarian, or Vegan on Pinterest.

Try Something New
Is there something you’ve always wanted to do but didn’t have time? Or felt you lacked the skill? Give it a go! Snorkeling, yoga, sewing, mountain climbing, karaoke, bread baking, surfing, gardening, meditation, or even running/walking a 1/2 marathon (like I want to do). Whatever! Move your mind and or your body and reach a goal. YOUR goal. Not what someone else thinks you should do. No pressure! Just try something new.
