June is home of the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s the month with the most daylight hours of any other. So why not take advantage of all that daylight and have some fun!

Visit Your Local Library
Give your library a call and ask about their hours. Plan a morning or afternoon to peruse the many books. Or research a new hobby. Check for story time for the kiddos as well as any other educational programs your library might offer. If you have books no longer used or that need a new home, ask if they accept book donations.

Walk Barefoot in the Grass
Did you know June 1st is National Go Barefoot Day? But if you’re anything like my David you’ll be going barefoot every day, all day, if possible. He was even barefoot at our wedding reception! How about kicking off your shoes and going for a walk in the grass! The cool green softness always feels good on barefeet.

Celebrate Father’s Day
June 18th is Father’s Day. Everyone has a father, one way or another. Give dad a visit. Or if he’s far away, ring him on the phone. Or even better: Facetime!
And if for some reason your father isn’t in your life, celebrate the father figure who has always been there for you: your grandfather, uncle, your best friend’s dad. Or the father of your children. It might even be a kind neighbor when you were growing up that was always watching out for you.
Celebrate the father figure in your life.

Go for a Swing
Swinging was one of my favorite things as a child. I remember swinging as high as I could and then jumping from the swing! (That is, before acrophobia set in!) I also have awesome memories of swinging and spinning on my Aunt MiMi’s tire swing with my cousins. So much fun!
If you don’t have a swing in your backyard, go to a park or playground. Feel the breeze on your face and hair. Tilt your head back and watch the clouds go by. Enjoy!

Celebrate your Garbage Man
June 17th is Global Garbage Man Day. A day when the world takes time to recognize the dedicated efforts of the men and women who keep our communities clean. I don’t know about you, but we are ever so thankful for the waste management personnel that drive by our home on pick up day EVERY SINGLE WEEK. Make it a point to go out and thank them. Offer them a bottle of water, beverage, or snack. You’re sure to know when they arrive since the trucks aren’t usually the quietest.
For many years, long ago, when our kids were growing up, we didn’t have waste pick up. We made weekly/monthly trips to the dump. Our oldest son (and friends he recruited for the job) used pitch forks, shovels and brooms, to unload the trash trailer. It was hard work and usually ended with a stop at our local burger joint, Tom’s Farms. Oh, and what about me? I sat in the cab of the truck and read a book, totally appreciating my kids. The pregnancies, labors and deliveries I went through were all worth it!
Sing Along in the Car
Easy peasy! Solo, duet, or the whole band/choir! Singing in the car all by myself is the safest way for me to sing. Just ask my family. Years ago my mom told me my kids wouldn’t sing off key if I wasn’t teaching them the songs. Seriously! But my oldest son, as a teen, topped that by asking me NOT to teach his parakeet to whistle. Why? Because his bird, Louie, whistled off key. Surprisingly (?) just like I did! These days I just crank up the volume and sing my heart out while driving by my self. Sing solo, or with the whole car load. Go ahead, just like The Carpenters sang:
Sing.
Sing a song.
Sing out loud, sing out strong.
Sing of good things, not bad.
Sing of happy, not sad.
Sing.
Sing a song.
Make it simple to last your whole life long.
Don’t worry that it’s not good enough for anyone else to hear.
Just sing.
Wade in a Fountain
Take those shoes off and cool your feet in a local fountain. Find a fountain where wading is permitted though. Don’t go breaking the law. I once mentioned in conversation with a Disneyland security guy that a particular fountain was calling my name. He smiled and advised, IF I was to wade in that particular fountain, be sure and do it at closing time. Then when he had to kick me out of the park I wouldn’t have missed out on anything. Ha!!
Make Paper Airplanes
This is another activity you can do alone, with the kids, or as a whole family. It would also be an awesome family reunion activity. Have paper airplane contests to see whose airplane flies the highest, farthest, or looks the coolest. Check out Fold ’N Fly to make your favorite paper airplane. We’d love to hear all about your fun!

Sunbathe
It’s a very healthy activity as long as you do properly. It’s a great way to get much needed vitamin D.
Studies show that just 15 minutes a day of sunbathing (without sunscreen) is great for bone health, reducing depression, help with better sleep, help heal skin issues, and boost immune systems. And those are just a few benefits! But not too much to get sunburned. Any longer than 15 minutes be sure to wear sunscreen and wear a hat!

Create Sidewalk Chalk Art
This is another fun activity that can be done alone, with the kids, or even with the neighbor kids or friends. Grab a box of sidewalk chalk and get creative. You don’t have to be an artist to be artistic. It doesn’t matter if you write a message for those who walk by, or draw a one of a kind work of art. Simply have fun and brighten your day and those around you.
