Years ago I would spend the better part of my summer days putting up fruits, jams, and vegetables from our garden.
The shiny mason jars of the colorful flavors of summer would proudly sit row upon row in the pantry.
It made me smile.
It made me happy.
Back in 1997, when life changed, I put my canning equipment on the back shelf. And there they’ve been, stored away.
I’d forgotten the joy of placing the bounty of summer on the pantry shelves.
I’d forgotten about the pure, natural and delectable nourishment my family so enjoyed.
Well, I’m back!
Kinda sorta.
We’ve been putting up jam as of late.
We had a good crop of apricots this season and recently picked up a few flats of strawberries from a local farmer’s market.
So last month it was apricot jam.
And now, it’s strawberry jam.
And we’re looking forward to our nectarine and tomato crops next month.
This year I’ve tried something I’ve never tried before. I’ve made batches of freezer jam.
It’s sweet and yummy (but won’t last long if we happen to lose power to the freezer!)
Now, with a newly found resolve, and the canning equipment out of storage, I’ll be canning again.
Canning is my personally preference.
